BPS
Solid State Batery
Phono Stage

The reduced size of the Nagra BPS phono preamplifier is the immediate result of using completely solid-state technology, less costly to implement than for the valve version.

The BPS electronics consumes so little that it operates on a single 9-volt battery with an autonomy of about 100 hours. It is thus possible to renounce the usual Nagra very-low-noise external power supply that is complex and expensive to manufacture.

The Nagra BPS enjoys an attractive positioning thanks to a simplified approach as regards functions. Nagra however retained the popular load adaptation found on the VPS model, which allows to obtain, with small plug-in modules, the desired matching between the phono preamp and the specific cartridge used on the turntable arm.
The equipment supports either moving-coils (MC) or moving-magnet cartridges (MM) by means of appropriate switching.

Assembled on a single motherboard, the electronics use exclusively discrete and military-type components (JAN standard). The amplification is provided by selected and matched bipolar transistors. The capacitors on the signal path are of audiophile quality and the precision resistors are MELF (Metal Electrode Leadless Face). Versatile, simple and easy to use, it is intended to work with the best modern turntable units.

Ideally, the VPS should be installed on the VFS (Vibration Free Suport) shock absorbing plates, to totally eliminate any mechianical vibration from being transmitted to the highly sensitive input stage.

PLL

Line Vacum Tube Pre Amplifier

Elegancija i lepota
Elegance and beauty
The PL-L is a Pure Class A vacuum tube line pre-amplifier, based on the proven design concepts of the world-renowned PL-P and offering 4 inputs. It differs from the PL-P in that it does not have a phono front-end stage and is not equipped with the internal battery for total power isolation. The PL-L has a remote control allowing the different functions to be remotely selected and optimal balancing of the output transformers. The jewel-like machined anodized aluminum case features input source selection, balance and volume controls, as well as a precision modulometer for system level matching. The PL-L is designed to provide the highest quality audio performance in an ultra-high-resolution audio system.

Quality in every detail
The PL-L uses three high-grade vacuum tubes and Nagra-made transformers to provide a variety of operating options. Each vacuum tube used in the PL-L has been burned-in for 12 hours and thoroughly tested to ensure the highest level of performance. The PL-L is designed in a pure audiophile approach of both quality and simplicity in signal’s path.
The power supply is always a key issue in the quality of a pre-amplifier. The external power supply is designed to deliver quiet and stable performance essential for the highest quality audio system. It is completely isolated from AC line noise.

Relaxed listening convenience
The remote control will allow selection between the different input sources and adjustment of balance and output level. Direct motors are implemented for driving volume and balance control potentiometers. This means, the remote control does not degrade the sound quality; the audio signal path remains
unchanged. This is the most elegant way to control the volume and balance in an analog product (as in the MPA-RCMI integrated power amplifier). The remote control unit can also be used to control the DAC and the MPA-RCMI.
Inputs
The PL-L provides four line inputs that include one XLR unbalanced (asymmetrical) and three RCA (CINCH) single-ended. The audio output is automatically muted when switching between sources.
Outputs
The outputs of the PL-L are directly coupled to the output vacuum tubes, specifically to ensure the highest audio performance. The level of the output connectors can be modified to match the specific level of the amplifier. Thanks to its specific design, the PL-L can drive loads as low as 600 Ω.
Tradition-Level matching through the Nagra modulometer
A highly precise, Nagra-made modulometer, identical to the legendary NAGRA IV-S, provides a multitude of functions through two coaxial, internal pointers representing the left and right channels. The Nagra modulometer is a true measurement device that allows precision over a large scale. The modulometer can be used to adjust the volume and balance potentiometers for:
  • Reaching a proper balance between left and right channels ;
  • Compensating the level differences between various recordings ;
  • Controlling the power supply DC input level ;
  • Controlling the output level of the amplifier (if correctly set).

PL-P

Battery operated Tube Pre Amplifier with phono stage

The PL-P vacuum tube pre-amplifier is a high quality pure class A tube based pre-amplifier including a high precision phono stage for vinyl records. With its unique internal rechargeable battery power supply, the highly sensitive phono stage, features individually hand-wound NAGRA built transformers, is entirely isolated from the mains power supply and hence avoids any form of hum loop. Able to handle both moving coil and moving magnet cartridges and up to 4 independent sources the PL-P is an extremely flexible preamplifier.
Uncompromised power supply
In any pre-amplifier, the power supply is a sensitive and significant component. This is especially true when dealing with phono levels. That’s why the PL-P power supply uses a set of rechargeable "D" cell batteries, operating through an external current charging AC supply. This design eliminates all disruptive effects of AC powering from wall outlets and may solve persistent hum problems. The internal power supply regulation circuitry of the PL-P uses proprietary, dual DC-to-DC converters to eliminate power supply ripples and assures a clean power source for all active electronic stages and components.

Unique design phono stage
The phono stage is built around the best tubes out of our selection and especially designed Nagra transformers for impressive noise figures, dynamic and high-resolution performance with both moving magnet and moving-coil cartridges.
Variable capacitive (from 47 pF to 837 pF) and resistive (30 Ω to 330 Ω) loading is provided to allow ideal matching with most available cartridges. Switches for selecting the appropriate loading options are internally mounted on the circuit board to protect sensitive low-level signals from undesirable interferences.
A class tube
Two triode sections, biased for pure class-A operation, are implemented in each channel for additional amplification. The PL-P has two stages, the first one for level input management and the second for output level management and record loop.
As in all vacuum tube circuits within the PL-P, precise DC filament voltage regulation from the power supply ensures low-noise, high-resolution performance and a long lifetime. The output stage vacuum tubes, operating in pure class-A, are directly coupled to the output connectors; they can accommodate loads as low as 600 Ω. To facilitate tape transcriptions and external signal processing, a full tape loop facility is also provided.

Attention to detail
To reduce unwanted interference, the main circuit board is mounted on elastomer dampers to eliminate the effect of external vibrations.
To conserve component life and battery reserve, only those vacuum tubes required for the selected input are turned on. The audio output is automatically muted when switching between input sources.

Ergonomics
Input selection is made on the left side of the front panel using a precision rotary switch. One phono and three line level inputs are provided. Input levels for all sources can be adjusted via left and right potentiometers on the front panel. A clever geared clutch mechanism, allows these channel adjustments to be made either independently or together.

Tradition - Level matching through the Nagra modulometer
A highly precise, Nagra-made modulometer, identical to the legendary NAGRA IV-S, provides a multitude of functions through two coaxial, internal pointers representing the left and right channels. The Nagra modulometer is a true measurement device that allows precision over a large scale. The modulometer can be used to adjust the volume and balance potentiometers for:

  • Reaching a proper balance between left and right channels ;
  • Compensating the level differences between various recordings ;
  • Controlling the power supply DC input level ;

PMA

Pyramid Monoblock
Power Amplifier

The PMA is a pair of mono-block floor standing pyramids. Offering a power output of 200 watts, these solid-state amplifiers offer a class AB operations inherited from the prestigious MPA family. They are equipped with an automatic power saving feature that allows them to switch on and off automatically without the intervention of the operator, and give the discerning audiophile a natural transparency and clarity of sound.

Unique design
The revolutionary concept encompasses an aluminium pyramidal design that is as functional as it is distinctive. The electronics benefit from the experience of the MPA, Nagra’s first solid-state power amplifier.
Mono block architecture
The mono block architecture allows each channel to have its own power unit. This improves the channel crosstalk and also the response to transient signals, in other words: natural and musical rendition. In addition the amplifier can now stand close to your loudspeaker allowing you to shorten speaker cable length and thus increase the quality of your system.

Pure power = pure sound
The performance of an amplifier depends very much on the powering unit, thus on the mains’ quality. As the latter can’t really be improved, the PMA integrates a PFC – Power Factor Corrector. This device acts like a reserve of power to deliver pure DC voltages to the amplifier. Benefiting from Nagra’s first PFC developed for the MPA, the pyramid’s innovative PFC is the subject of a new Nagra patent.
Audiophile’s choices
To achieve ultimate sound and reliability, the selection of every component is critical. This is especially true for the choice of the power transistors. After numerous electrical and subjective tests, the Research and Development team has chosen to use MOSFET transistors from Exicon. They demonstrated the best characteristicsamong all the specifications we are concerned with.
Controlling power
When dealing with top-class loudspeakers, you are entitled to expect the best protection from your amplifier. The PMA will automatically switch to the protection mode in the event of a DC voltage occurring on the output connectors or in the case of overheating. In addition, an overload LED will blink if the PMA reaches its maximum power.
Power Factor Corrector
The PFC allows the PMA to draw a truly sinusoidal current from the mains. This will avoid electrical pollution and highly spiked currents that can generate undesirable harmonics from the amplifier to the other equipment. This significantly improves the purity and integrity of other devices such as digital and analogue source components. The PFC also minimizes the harmful electrical and nasty audible effects of traditional power supply designs. Last but not least, the PFC reduces the need for filtering; this allows the PMA to use smaller condensers, thus saving space.
Connectivity & compatibility
The PMA offers both balanced and unbalanced inputs on XLR and RCA connectors. The calibrated level for maximum power can be internally selected to 1 or 2V allowing the pyramids to be compatible with any preamplifier or DAC.
Ergonomics
The PMA features an Auto-detect power-on, it will automatically start upon receiving a signal on the input connectors. It will also turn off after 20 minutes without receiving signal. This is a great feature for a stereo system, and is a tremendous advantage in a multi-channel system.

VPA

Pure Class APush-Pull

Triode Monoblocks

The VPA is a pair of mono block vacuum tube power amplifiers. Equipped with symmetrical and asymmetrical inputs, they offer a power output of 50 Watts through a pure class A output stage with no feedback. Using a pair of matched and individually selected 845 output tubes the VPA offers a clarity of sound second-to-none.  Since its introduction in 1998, the VPA has set new standard for vacuum tube amplifiers, won prestigious awards and, more importantly, became a reference for a tremendous number of audiophiles all over the world.

Difficult Speaker Loads and Zero Negative feedback
Vacuum tube amplifiers seldom drive difficult speaker loads with success. Using electrostatic or low-impedance dynamic speaker designs with these amplifiers often yield unpredictable results. With the VPA, implementing a zero negative feedback design renders matching difficult speakers much easier. In addition, the VPA offers 4, 8 and 16 Ω outputs so it can accommodate even the most demanding loudspeakers.Constructed in machined-aluminum towers, its highly sophisticated design is based on Nagra’s simple rule: only the best components, no compromises on quality. In addition, the VPA uses fully balanced circuitry from input to output to minimize intermodulation distortion and phase shift as well as decreasing the need for internal feedback.
As a result, the rise time, slew rate and overshoot characteristics of the Nagra VPA are uncommonly good compared to other amplifiers, and simply extraordinary for one based on vacuum tubes. These performance characteristics are constant whether the VPA is delivering minimum or full power.

Difficult Speaker Loads and Zero Negative feedback
Vacuum tube amplifiers seldom drive difficult speaker loads with success. Using electrostatic or low-impedance dynamic speaker designs with these amplifiers often yield unpredictable results. With the VPA, implementing a zero negative feedback design renders matching difficult speakers much easier. In addition, the VPA offers 4, 8 and 16 Ω outputs so it can accommodate even the most demanding loudspeakers.
Fast, Deep and Low with Nagra Output Transformers
Proprietary Nagra output transformers are used to avoid low-frequency saturation and high frequency ringing so common in other transformer-coupled output states. Bass notes are delivered with absolute authority and sound-stage scale delineation is simply superb.

Choice of 845 Tubes
The 845 tubes go through a 24 hour burning and numerous measurements before computer-assisted matching by pairs.
Inputs
The VPA features both balanced and unbalanced inputs on XLR and RCA connectors.
Monoblock design
The monoblock design offers the advantage of providing one power unit per channel, this contributes to the channel separation and thus respects the signal’s integrity. The amplifiers should now stand close to your loudspeakers, enabling shorter speaker cables to be employed and thus allows a better damping factor.
In addition, the tower configuration allows an optimization of the floor space.

Precise System Matching through the Nagra Load Match Meter
The high precision, illuminated Nagra Load Match Meter on each monoblock amplifier offers a unique function: it allows the owner to check the perfect operation of the 845 output tubes and to match each VPA's output precisely with the speakers. By indicating both the peak DC voltage and current drawn on the output tube anode, it is easy to spot speaker mis-match and suggest corrective action. It is our attention to details like these that ensures complete installation success and ultimate enjoyment of your favorite music.

About the company - Nagra, a legendary brand, an unique company
Few names in the world of professional audio enjoy prestige on a par with that of Nagra.
Spanning more than half a century, the story of the brand has been punctuated with inventions and developments that have revolutionized the history of sound recording.
In 1951, Stefan Kudelski developed the first independent, portable recorder, the
Nagra I. This machine went down in history as it introduced a concept that had remained unattainable until that moment: freedom of movement.
For the world of radio and television and for the cinema and recording industry in particular, this was a giant step forward, and one that opened up extraordinary horizons. The invention was all the more spectacular in that it came with a very high quality of sound reproduction. In this regard, Nagra recorders surpassed many large stationary installations.
