Evolution One Power Amplifier

The Evolution One amplifier is the result of Dan D'Agostino's unrelenting pursuit of the most realistic musical reproduction 
possible in the home. Immensely powerful, the Evolution One is a monaural design that features a separate power supply for 
each channel. Stunning aesthetics hint at the advanced amplifier circuitry housed within its walls. The 450 watt Class A 
circuitry features the latest advancements in Krell amplifier design including the proprietary Krell Current Mode topology and 
the latest versions of the Krell Sustained Plateau Bias and CAST circuitries.
FEATURES In the Evolution One, the output impedance of the final gain stages is one hundredth that of the final gain stage in 
most power amplifiers. This provides extremely wide bandwidth and very high current capability. The Evolution One does not 
employ global negative feedback the final gain stages use only 8 dB of local, nested negative feedback. This is one-five hundredth 
of the amount used in most solid-state power amplifiers. The result is an extraordinarily open, liquid, effortless sound.
The rails powering the low level and gain stages in the Evolution One are regulated twice for total immunity from fluctuations in the 
AC mains and virtually noise-free output. All the regulators use current-mode circuitry for wide bandwidth, low output impedance, 
and complete immunity to varying load conditions. The high-current regulators powering the Evolution One output stages use 
fully complementary gain stages and output drivers. The resulting wide bandwidth and low output impedance of the Evolution One 
surpasses even the stringent demands of the amplifier output stages. The driver and output stages in the high current regulators 
use 14 pairs of the same robust, high performance power transistors used in the amplifier output stages. All the regulators are 
located in the amplifier chassis to provide ultra low impedance supply rails for the audio circuitry. Krell alone employs regulated 
output stages of this nature, which contribute dramatically to the current capability of the amplifier. Essentially an amplifier within 
an amplifier, the complexity and cost of the Evolution One regulator virtually insures that no other manufacture dare attempt it.
The new Evolution Bias system features 12 individual bias levels for optimum performance and efficiency. Evolution Bias constantly 
compares the audio signal at the input stage with impedance at the output stage, and adjusts the bias current accordingly. In 
addition, a proprietary bias monitor continuously measures and adjusts the output stage bias, eliminating the need for future 
adjustment or calibration. Housed in a separate chassis, the Evolution One power supply makes use of extensive electrical and 
magnetic shielding to keep radiated interference out of critical amplifier circuits. Internal high current line conditioning circuitry 
filters RF noise on the AC mains, as well as compensating for asymmetric power waveforms and DC on the mains. 
A dedicated 165 VA toroidal transformer with six independent secondary windings powers the amplifier's low level stages, gain 
stages, and control circuitry. Power for the high current regulators and amplifier output stages comes from two massive 2500 VA 
toroidal transformers. These in turn drive eight 35-amp bridge rectifiers and 120,000 microfarads of filter capacitance. High reliability 
connectors with 56 machined, gold plated, 20-amp contacts transmit these tremendous power reserves to the regulators.
Evolution Two Preamplifier

The Evolution Two preamplifier is the ultimate expression of Krell preamplifier technology. A monaural preamplifier with a separate

zero feedback, proprietary Krell Current Mode and CAST circuitries results in a two megahertz open loop bandwidth that guarantees 
near perfection in the critical listening spectrum. Although the Evolution Two embraces the simplistic pleasures of a high-end 
two-channel preamp, it also features sophisticated control capabilities for better integration into a state-of-the-art home environment. 
FEATURES All signal gain in the Evolution Two is realized in the current domain using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors with 
nearly 500 times the open loop linearity of other designs. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the Evolution Two preamplifier, 
nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 50 parts per million, and the open loop bandwidth extends to two 
megahertz. The result is an extraordinarily wide and deep image, with an open and effortless sound.
The Evolution Two volume control is realized with a digitally controlled analog circuit with 216 step resolution, which uses low 
resistance, high-linearity solid-state switches and discrete precision resistors. Control signals for the switches are optically coupled 
for low noise and maximum signal integrity. The bandwidth and transient response of the Evolution Two circuitry are virtually unaffected 
by the volume setting. Typical volume controls, working in the voltage domain, introduce frequency response and phase anomalies 
that change in accordance with the degree of attenuation. The current domain attenuator in the Evolution Two avoids these anomalies, 
revealing high frequencies that sound especially smooth and extended. Music seems to emerge from “jet black” silence. The analog 
and digital signal paths are not interconnected in the Evolution Two. Where necessary, digital control signals are optically coupled to 
analog circuits. The Evolution Two has two buffered tape outputs: one linked to the main signal selection bus, and another with its own 
independent signal-selection bus. This allows the option of listening to one source while recording another, or the option of connecting 
two tape decks having different input signals. Both tape outputs have single ended and voltage outputs. Either the fourth single-ended 
input or the third balanced input can be user-configured as a tape monitor input, allowing the opportunity to use home or professional 
recording equipment.
Housed in a separate chassis, the Evolution Two power supply makes use of extensive electrical and magnetic shielding to keep 
radiated interference out of critical preamplifier circuits. Internal line conditioning circuitry filters RF noise on the AC power, and 
compensates for asymmetric power waveforms and DC on the mains. Power for the analog stages comes from a large 170 VA toroidal 
transformer. This transformer drives four 8-amp bridge rectifiers and 39,600 microfarads of filter capacitance. Each Evolution Two 
preamplifier channel has as much power supply capability as many stereo power amplifiers. Most stereo preamplifiers use 10 VA 
transformers. The Evolution Two power supply utilizes 30 times the current capability of typical designs, thus guaranteeing its’ ability 
to deliver enormous transients without hesitation. The Evolution Two main regulators for the analog stages are scaled-down versions 
of those used to power the output stages of the Evolution One amplifier. Operating in current mode, with fully complementary gain 
stages and output drivers, wide bandwidth, low output impedance, and high current capability, the main regulators easily exceed the 
requirements of the analog stages. The driver and output stages in the main analog regulators use five pairs of 150 Volt, 8 Amp, 
40 megahertz power transistors.
A dedicated 90 VA toroidal transformer with three independent secondary windings powers the Evolution Two digital control circuitry. 
The regulators for the control circuitry team ultra-stable voltage reference chips with the same discrete high-current driver and output 
transistors used in the main analog regulators. These ample power reserves are brought to the Evolution Two via high reliability 12-pin 
connectors with machined, gold plated, three-amp contacts. Secondary voltage regulators for each analog stage in the Evolution Two 
provide ultra-quiet, rock-solid supply rails, as well as complete isolation between all the analog stages.

to perform all surround mode processing. Supports Dolby Digital Surround EX, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 6.1 ES, DTS 5.1,

all 12 channels. Evolution CAST, which stands for current audio signal transmission, is a proprietary method of sending the 
audio signal between components in the current domain, from a high impedance transmitter to a low impedance receiver. 
Krell components connected in Evolution CAST act together as an electrically unified whole, free from the deleterious effects 
normally imposed by the connecting cables. Preamp mode bypasses all digital circuitry and routes the analog input, stereo 
or 7.1 multi-channel, directly to the volume control for the purest path possible. Separate power supplies for digital and analog 
circuit paths are linear design and feature custom made, low-noise transformers and robust regulation. All-discrete video 
circuitry bandwidth is greater than 350 MHz and provides pristine pass-through of all progressive and wideband high definition

KAV-280p Preamplifier

The KAV-280p is a superb sounding stereo preamplifier that brings the dynamics and resolution of separate components to 
the KAV Series. Balanced, direct-coupled circuitry is utilized from input to output, and the level attenuator is accomplished 
with a unique, digitally controlled analog circuit. Balanced and single ended inputs and outputs are supported. The 
custom-machined aluminum enclosure is available in silver or black. 
FEATURES The KAV-280p uses current tunnel and surface mount technology derived directly from the state-of-the-art Krell 
Current Tunnel (KCT) preamplifier. Its extremely wide bandwidth makes the KAV-280p the ideal preamplifier for today's high 
resolution sources. The extended frequency response made possible by Krell Current Mode circuitry insures fidelity and 
phase coherence within the audio passband for convincing recovery of the most complex audio programs.
The single ended and balanced inputs are buffered for optimum interface characteristics. All circuitry is direct-coupled; there 
are no capacitors in the signal path. Four layer copper clad circuit cards utilize a proprietary ground scheme and are designed 
by Krell engineers to minimize noise and crosstalk. High-speed, bipolar transistors are used throughout.
The power supply is heavily regulated and utilizes a 100VA torroidal transformer. As in the KCT, regulation is nested throughout

channels. The S-1500/5 and S-1500/6 may be easily upgraded with additional channels, up to seven. 
POWER Rock solid, linear power supply design renders the S-1500 impervious to speaker demand or AC line fluctuations. A 1,500 VA 
toroidal transformer is designed for massive current delivery while maintaining an ultra-low noise profile. A robust, 80,000-microfarad array 
of quick-charging filter capacitance offers enormous energy storage that is available in an instant. Surface Mount Technology is utilized in 
the amplifier channels to achieve the high circuit density required for wide bandwidth performance. Krell Current Mode, fully balanced 
topologies, are utilized for all amplifier channels for the lowest noise and greatest detail retrieval. Class-A circuitry is utilized in the input, 
pre-driver, and driver stages to provide the most accurate signal path. Eight high-speed power devices per channel deliver 150 W into 
8 Ohms and 300 W into 4 Ohms. The amplifier is stable at any load impedance.
CONNECTIONS  All channels support balanced inputs and outputs. High quality, 5-way binding posts allow speaker connections via bare 
wires, spade lugs, or banana plugs. 
LAT-1000 Loadspeaker

The LAT-1000 shatters conventional thinking about mid-sized, floor-standing loudspeaker performance. Lightning-fast bass response reveals 
layer upon layer of dynamic contrast and extends below 30 Hz. Midrange is uncolored and articulate, not unlike that of the classic electrostats, 
but with speed and impact that are possible only with the finest dynamic drivers. Treble response is detailed and extended, and contributes 
greatly to the impressive imaging capabilities of the LAT-1000. 
FEATURES The Krell Lossless Acoustic Transducer LAT-1000 further explores the unique fidelity and dynamics offered by Krell CAST™--Current 
Audio Signal Transmission--technology. The LAT-1000 is uniquely capable of reproducing the pure, exceptionally high resolution, wide-bandwidth 
signal delivered by Krell CAST components.Separate crossover network assemblies are used for each driver complement (low, mid, and high). 
All circuitry is on 1/8-inch thick glass epoxy circuit boards with 4 oz. copper traces, ensuring low microphonics, low resistance, low inductance, 
and high current handling. A 2nd-order network at 283 Hz mates new, 8" custom made woofer drivers to the new bass port arrangement. For the 
midrange, a second order Bessel high pass filter @ 275 Hz and third order Butterworth high pass filter @ 1,850 Hz optimizes frequency response 
and power handling. The tweeter crossover is accomplished with a third order high pass filter @ 2,800 Hz. Network inductors are all air-core pure 
copper designs, the largest of which is formed of 10-gauge wire, measuring 6 inches in diameter. Individually potted polypropylene WIMA capacitors 
are used in parallel to minimize inductance and resistance, and improve current handling. System impedance curve is extremely smooth, and 
sensitivity is a high 91 dB SPL at 1 meter with 1 W input. Custom gold-plated brass binding post terminals assure optimum signal transfer.
A 1-inch (25 mm) tweeter delivers flat response to 50 kHz. A central waveguide optimizes dispersion characteristics. Low compression, 
multi-chamber design greatly reduces resonance. A powerful neodymium motor enhances upper frequency response. Two 51/4-inch (15 cm) 
midrange feature lightweight magnesium cones for fast response. Rubber surrounds help to eliminate colorations induced by resonance modes. 
A proprietary suspension and extended voice coil assure extremely linear performance, and a phase plug promotes clarity throughout the mid-band.
Custom made woofer drivers feature massive, .8mm thick aluminum cones that provide the perfect combination of strength and speed needed to 
transmit the power provided by the substantial motor assembly. High tech rubber surrounds dampen unwanted resonances. The low frequency range 
of this driver is vastly improved over previous designs. 
Resolution 3 Loadspeaker

The Resolution 3 shatters the conventional thinking about 2-way, bookshelf loudspeaker designs. Whether being used as the cornerstone of a fine Krell 
stereo system, or as part of a complete Krell HEAT System, the Resolution 3 delivers all of the dynamics and extended frequency response you'd 
expect from a Krell Resolution loudspeaker. 
FEATURES  A 1" (25 mm) tweeter delivers flat response to 50 kHz. Its central waveguide optimizes dispersion characteristics. The 8" mid/bass driver 
utilizes an ultra-light magnesium cone for bass precision and low end detail as well as better low frequency projection and impact. A large motor 
enhances cone control and lowers distortion. A copper phase plug helps reduce eddy currents for increased midrange accuracy. The tweeter crossover 
features a third order Butterworth high pass filter @ 2725 Hz. The mid/bass driver is crossed over via a third order Butterworth low pass filter @ 2700 Hz.
A massive, 2" thick MDF baffle eliminates mechanical driver interaction. All Resolution enclosures are constructed of 1" thick, MDF panels for enhanced 
rigidity and immunity to vibration. Heavy internal bracing dramatically reduces cabinet resonance. An elegant, curved enclosure design reduces standing
